PROGRAMS OF STUDY & COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Spanish (SPA)

Minor: Yeshiva College
Eighteen credits in SPA courses, including one advanced language course and two literature courses (one on Latin American literature and one on the literature of Spain). Courses at the 3000 level may not be included.

1101, 1102 Elementary Spanish. 3 credits.
Essentials of oral expression, listening comprehension, and basic reading and writing skills. For students with less than two years of high school Spanish or equivalent experience. Students with one year of high school Spanish may take 1102 with the permission of the instructor or cluster advisor.

(1120 Elementary Spanish-Concentrated). 3 credits.
Accelerated course covering the basics of first-year elementary Spanish in one semester. For students whose background prevents their taking SPA 1101, 1102, but is insufficient for 1201, 1202.

1201, 1202 Intermediate Spanish. 3 credits.
Intensive review of grammar; readings in literature; exercises in composition and conversation. Prerequisite: two years of high school Spanish or SPA 1102. Students with three years of high school Spanish may take 1202 with permission of the instructor or cluster advisor.

1231 Advanced Spanish language and composition. 2-3 credits.
Work on special problems of grammar; frequent exercises in translation; practice in composition and conversation.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202.

2022; 2023 Masterpieces of Latin-American Literature. 3 credits.
Major literary works of Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.

2101; 2102 Masterpieces of Spanish Literature. 3 credits.
Study of the major literary works of Spain.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.

(2113; 2114 Survey of Spanish Literature). 3 credits.
Spanish literature from its beginnings to the present, with selections from the major literary works. Analysis and discussion.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.

(2131; 2132 Survey of Latin-American Literature). 3 credits.
Major literary works of Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.

(2410; 2411 Civilization in Spain Through Literature). 3 credits.
An integrated study of the historical, literary, and cultural aspects of Spanish civilization; special attention to Sephardic contributions.
Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
