Russian (RUS)

1101, 1102 Elementary Russian. 3 credits.
Essentials of oral expression, listening comprehension, and basic reading and writing skills. For students with less than two years of high school Russian or equivalent experience. Students with one year of high school Russian may take 1102 with permission of the instructor or cluster advisor.

(1107–1108 Introduction to Scientific Russian).

1201, 1202 Intermediate Russian. 3 credits.
Intensive review of grammar; readings in literature; exercises in composition and conversation. Prerequisite: two years of high school Russian or RUS 1102. Students with three years of high school Russian may take 1202 with permission of the instructor or cluster advisor.

2101 Masterpieces of Russian Literature. 3 credits.
Great works of Russian prose, poetry, and drama.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.

2321 Classical Russian Drama. 3 credits.
History, theory, and generic antecedents of classical Russian drama through the late 18th century; analysis of individual classical plays of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.

2331 Russian Poetry. 3 credits.
History, theory, and generic antecedents of Russian poetry of the 19th and early 20th centuries; poetic analysis; literary trends of the period, e.g., romanticism, realism, symbolism.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.

2372 Russian Short Fiction. 3 credits.
Short works of fiction by the most important Russian classical and 20th-century authors.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.

2332 Lyrical Prose & Poetry. 3 credits.
Exploration of the lyrical impulse in Russian literature. Readings include works by Pushkin, Turgenev, Chekhov and Mayakovsky.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.

3332 Lyrical Prose & Poetry in Translation. 3 credits.

(4931 The Jew in Russian Literature). 3 credits.
The portrayal of the Jew in Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries; analysis of prose and poetic works, including memoirs, letters, and diaries.
Prerequisite: RUS 1202 or equivalent experience.
